Birth Center
Choosing an FCMC midwife-attended birth instead of a traditional hospital birth has many advantages to the expectant mother. Women who choose FCMC can expect more personalized attention, and all prenatal care to be provided by one person, the same person who will attend your birth. Prenatal appointment times are long enough to encourage discussion of any areas of concern, and clients are expected to be informed partners in their prenatal and birth care. Special attention is given to each woman's personal birth preferences, as she is the only person being attended by Joyce or Kathleen and the birth assistant.

Home Birth
Many women find that the privacy of their own home is the optimal birth environment. They feel completely comfortable there and are not distracted by changing locations in the middle of labor. Everyone present is an invited guest in her home. Neither mother nor her newborn are exposed to any foreign germs, further reducing the risk of infection. Home birth is especially convenient and desirable to many mothers who have older children. Older siblings are best able to be as deeply or minimally involved as they choose in their own familiar surroundings. FCMC accepts home birth clients within one hour of the birth center.

Water Birth
Laboring in water has been called by some "the midwife's epidural" for its dramatic effect on reducing the pain of labor. The more relaxed a woman can stay, the less intense her labor pain. For many expectant mothers, a bath is the most relaxing place they can imagine. Our midwives are experienced in attending water births, both at the birth center and in home births. They encourage women to labor and birth in any location they find comfortable.
